In 2022, Gabriel Amijai Benderski Perez, Juan Martín Lusiardo, and Santiago Ternande, in collaboration with the Vignelli Archive, launched a global call for creativity, inviting 150 designers to contribute to a poster commemorating the 90th anniversary of Vignelli's birth. This project not only sought to honor Vignelli’s remarkable career but also to highlight his enduring influence on contemporary graphic design.
Known for his preference for a limited colour palette and a few carefully chosen typefaces, Vignelli’s work is characterised by its timelessness and functionality. Among the very few typefaces he regularly employed was Neue Haas Grotesk, a choice that reflects his belief in the importance of type as a visual element.
In my design, I embraced this minimalist approach, using Neue Haas Grotesk as the primary typeface. The choice of colour was equally deliberate; I opted for a single hue from Vignelli’s ‘severe’ palette—red, black, and white. This decision was not only an homage to his stylistic preferences but also a nod to the emotional resonance that a bold colour can impart in graphic communication.
Drawing further inspiration from Vignelli’s iconic work, I referenced the Max 365 perpetual calendar he designed in 1975. The calendar’s tight letter spacing and structural clarity influenced my poster layout, allowing me to create a piece that echoed Vignelli's meticulous attention to detail. By replicating this aesthetic, I aimed to evoke a sense of continuity between the past and present, illustrating how Vignelli's principles continue to inform and inspire modern design practices.
