For six years, photographer Marc Wilson embarked on an extensive journey to document the profound stories of Holocaust survivors and their families.
Travelling across 20 countries and 130 locations, he documented the narratives of 22 individuals whose experiences are deeply rooted in one of history's darkest chapters. This project culminated in the creation of the book A Wounded Landscape: Bearing Witness to the Holocaust, which seeks to honour their legacies and bear witness to their experiences.
Collaborating closely with Marc, I was tasked with developing the book's design, which comprises more than 350 photographs, alongside numerous maps and texts, organised to highlight the interconnectedness of the survivors’ stories.
The design employs a unique structural repetition of images that echoes the overlapping narratives, enhancing the emotional impact and reinforcing the themes of memory. The book is printed on two distinct Fedrigoni papers: Arena Smooth and Symbol Freelife Satin, chosen for their tactile quality and visual appeal. And bound in basalt grey with a contrasting red cloth quarter binding and a single black foil for the title.
The book is now held in multiple collections, including the Yad Vashem Holocaust Remembrance Centre, The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the Simon Wiesenthal Centre.
